Sonoma
Healdsburg, CA

On a steeply sloping, redwood covered hillside in Northern California's wine county, this private residence is designed in harmony with the landscape. Passive solar strategies inform the orientation of structures, windows and roof overhangs. The various pavilions are arranged with outdoor living spaces between them, in order to frame the sweeping vistas of the valley below, and to maintain a sense of surprise. Consisting of a main house, library pavilion, and guest quarters, the arrangement of low structures in an open formation reduces the perceived building mass, in deference to the formidable natural surroundings of hills, forest and open sky.
